Even before the war, life was hard for the children in this halfway house in Luhansk in eastern Ukraine. An endless longing for security and normality contest with drunk mothers, violent fathers and desperate poverty. Kolya, Eva and Sascha find refuge for a few short months in a worn-down orphanage near the front line. It's a haven of safety where tears can transform into soap bubbles. But it's a makeshift, temporary home. On February 24th this year, the children of Luhansk had to flee. A House Made of Splinters is a heart-wrenching film about the trust and hope care can give, as well as its limits.
