Every month, your bank account replenishes itself – without you having to do anything. Now, the world’s biggest, boldest social experiment is changing lives against the odds in a small village in Kenya. Chosen by US organisation GiveDirectly, the residents of Kogutu are to receive 22 dollars a month for 12 years. The village is suddenly under close scrutiny: Is the money bringing progress or chaos? What does envy elicit in the neighbouring village? And who is actually entitled to receive the money? Meanwhile, in Manhattan’s glass-windowed offices, economists are observing the developments at a safe distance. They are convinced they have found an infallible algorithm to end global poverty. But is money always a blessing?
